Taanpura is a long necked plucked string instrument.It is also known as “Taar Yantra”.It is used in singing.It doesnot play melody but rather supports and sustains melody of another intrument or singer byproviding a continous harmonium sound or drone.The name taanpura is derived from tana,referring to a musical phrase and pura means full.In Carnatic music it is known as” Tambura”.Taanpura has four strings that are joined together on top with four Knob.The first String of Taanpura plays notes of Mandra Pancham (lower octave Pa).Other two strings sounds for Madhya Sa ( middle octave Sa) and are thinner than the first string.The last string is for Mandra Sa (lower octave Sa).
